Seasonal Cleanse 2012
About the Cleanse

The Fundamentals Of Cleansing

  1. Remove toxins, stimulants and other addictive substances.
  2. Cleanse stored toxins by supporting the organs of detoxification.
  3. Eat what we are designed to eat and take the load off the digestive system in order to cleanse well and repair.

Why Cleanse with each Season?

  • Reconnect and flow with the changing seasons, climate, environment, long or short days and changes in type of foods and food supply on offer. These cycles or rhythms directly impact our own 24 hour circadian rhythm and women in particularly their monthly menstrual cycle.
  • A process of re grouping and taking stock when life feels overwhelming, confusing, fast paced and just all too exhausting and stressful.
  • A process to keep you healthy and well and make clear choices rather than live out of reaction or by default, to choose what you want out of your life and to stay true to your goals and purpose.
  • A top up on your education that keeps you well informed and help you discern through the overwhelming amount of information about health, food, nutrition, and lifestyle.
  • To prevent illness as you are able to focus on and address the underlying causes of ill health rather than wait until you break and need to take a forced rest.
  • Allow your body to heal and repair more effectively and eliminate addictions to any form of stimulants or relaxants or pain relievers and identifying and removing toxins from the body.
  • To specifically make a baby (part of the Preconception Care program), to feel free, light, lean and invigorated, to repair digestive imbalance and create healthy hormones, to eliminate inflammation and address immune disorders, to provide an excellent and healthy foundation for baby making, to address any chronic, ongoing disorder, to detox heavy medication, post surgery, pre and or post dental appointments.
  • To eliminate parasites, candida and other opportunistic bugs which become infections in the body such as found in the Respiratory, Urinary, Digestive or  Reproductive Systems: UTI, Thrush, Colds, Helicobacter, Worms etc

When to Cleanse?

It is recommended to Cleanse 2 weeks prior to each change in Season. In Australia:

Spring: Commence mid August for September, October, November

Summer: Commence mid November for December, January, February

Autumn: Commence mid February for March, April, May

Winter: Commence mid May for June, July, August

What are toxins and where do they come from?

Chemical toxins: lead (old homes, paint), chlorine (pools, tap water), fluoride (tap water and mouth cleaning products), mercury (amalgam in teeth), arsenic (seafood), alcohol, cigarettes, medications, synthetic supplements (also found in foods) cleaning, garden and beauty/personal care products, dry cleaned clothes, synthetic fabrics and carpets, additives directly added to our foods and fluids during farming, manufacturing and transporting or found in our food chain via external pollutants such as vaccines, hormones and antibiotics given to animals we consume, polluted and nutrient poor soils in which our food is grown in.

Biological toxins include bacteria, viruses, yeasts and parasites that are able to induce disease particularly when they reproduce to cause a serious infection. This dependent on the host’s immune system.

Physically toxins: not usually thought of under the heading of “toxic” by many people: direct blows, concussion, sound and vibration, heat and cold, and electromagnetic radiation such as electrical energy, radio, microwave, infrared, the visible region we perceive as light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Electromagnetic radiation carries energy and momentum, which may be imparted when it interacts with matter.

Endotoxins: Toxins produced by the digestive system in response to poor digestion (Ama or undigested food material and food allergens) and imbalanced microflora (toxins released by bugs).

How does our body deal with toxins?

Digestive system: Mouth – chewing produces saliva which can destroy bugs found in food plus helps you breakdown food. Stomach -healthy acids and enzymes help you breakdown bugs and foods Small intestine – healthy and enzymes help you breakdown bugs and foods. The health of the lining of your small intestine is important as what you digest goes into blood stream to your liver for further processing. Leaky gut is where the lining of the small intestine is too porous and allows bugs and undigested foods and toxins into blood stream. Large intestine or bowels – eliminate bugs and indigestible foods (faecal matter) and toxins. If the bowels are not working well faecal matter is reabsorbed so as to be eliminated via other organs of elimination.

Liver: Foods/fluids that we eat are taken in the blood straight from the small intestine to the liver for detox & metabolism and only then it is released for circulation to the rest of the body. The liver makes these toxins more water-soluble so as they can pass through the kidneys.

Kidneys: The kidneys are organs that filter wastes (such as urea) from the blood and excrete them, along with water, as urine.

Lymphatics: Lymph nodes act as filters, with an internal honeycomb of reticular connective tissue filled with lymphocytes that collect and destroy bacteria and viruses. When the body is fighting an infection, lymphocytes multiply rapidly and produce a characteristic swelling of the lymph nodes.

Lungs: Its principal function is to transport oxygen from the atmosphere into the bloodstream, and to excrete carbon dioxide from the bloodstream into the atmosphere. Detox 70% toxins via lungs just by  breathing well.

Skin: The skin is the largest eliminating organ of the body. It eliminates approximately 1 kilogram of waste acids daily. If the skin cannot eliminate these impurities, an accumulation of waste products in the   tissues occur, interfering with the nourishment and oxygenation of the cells. The benefits of saunas,  spas and scrubs in spas around the world have been demonstrated for centuries as a cure for many diseases.

The Autumn Cleanse Program 2012: This can be implemented as a simple 2 week cleanse or a more comprehensive 6-8 week cleanse as outlined below

The focus is on cleansing with nutrient dense broths, sunlight, activity, weeding adverse microbial pathogens & toxins (from Summer excesses) & cleansing the lungs & bowels as we prepare for the cooler months with greater susceptibility to colds & flu.

Nutrition:

  • Starve those bugs by eliminating processed ingredients, sugar & all artificial & natural sweeteners (including high sugar fruit & vegetables), yeast, alcohol,  grains, caffeine, processed dairy & refined salt.
  • Replenish with the new seasonal, local produce, organic or chemical free, whole fruit & vegetables. What’s in season: Fruit: Apples, kiwi, lemons, pears, berries, persimmon, quince, plums. Vegetables: asparagus, beets, cabbage, carrots, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, pumpkin, tomatoes &  zucchini. Avoid frozen & canned. Choose low starch & sugary types.
  • Nutrient dense broths with fresh herbs & dried herbs & spices. Made from organic, pastured bones from beef, lamb or chicken or fish bones. Add garlic, ginger & turmeric roots. Fresh parsley & coriander leaves & their roots. OVViO Organic Indian, Oriental or Mexican Herb & Spice Blends are rich & warming & aid bowel & lung cleansing.
  • Eat Pastured: meat, dairy & eggs from the highest of quality farming methods.

Sunlight & activity: Sunlight & outdoor activity is a must. Naturally move out doors as the days become longer and more sunlight is available for Vitamin D and healing. Keep your energy moving & avoid stagnation by exercising & dry brushing. Dry Brushing supports the cleanse & opens the channels of elimination. Specific natural bristle brushes for face & body are available from our store.

Weed out bad bugs or adverse microbial pathogens & create an environment for healthy bacteria which is the foundation of a healthy respiratory/immune system & bowels. We can tailor a herbal tea &/or tonic for you for a general cleanse or to help specifically cleanse your bowels & respiratory.

A note on Cleansing  or weeding parasites during the Full Moon: The Full Moon falls on the 8th of March 2012 (first week of Autumn). Parasites lay their eggs during the full moon. This is when we will observe heightened sensitivity & scratching many body parts. It is ideal to be Weeding out eggs & parasites during this phase.

How to Cleanse?

The length & type of cleanse can be individually worked out with Anthia. If you Cleanse seasonally & you are in general good health 2 weeks every season is sufficient.

Part 1:

Book in for a 1 hour consultation with Anthia. Complete questionnaire and submit:http://www.ovvioorganics.com.au/meet/seasonal-cleansing-consultation At your appointment we will review your questionnaire, your health goals and preparation for your cleanse.

NOTE: This step may not be indicated if you have consulted with me or attended a workshop.

This first step is about creating time and space to cleanse well, to buy, create, prepare and eat meals, to hydrate well, to read, and get informed about health and lifestyle, to connect with nature, get creative or be still. Get into presence by meditating, creativity such as singing, drawing, journaling, painting, dancing, walking, tai chi or yoga. This stimulates parasympathetic nervous system which allows you to cleanse, heal and repair more effectively. When your body is stressed no matter what the cause: physical, emotional, chemical, electromagnetic, nutritional, the sympathetic nervous system is stimulated to release stress hormones which can decrease immunity, repair, healing, digestion and create imbalance in blood sugar levels and hormone health. It’s not so easy to cleanse in this state and feels like another chore or burden for an already unhealthy and stressed out body.

Specifically:

  • Cut out processed foods, caffeine, alcohol, sugar, take out, refined salt, vegetables oils, soy, tap water, milk powder, gluten, additives, flour, cereals, soft drinks, juices, chemically leavened bread and supplements and over the counter medications.
  • Choose whole fresh foods, organic and pastured animals. Eat nutrient dense food designed for the healthy human. An eating plan will be given to you as well and a shopping list and food education.
  • Source, prepare and cook own food.
  • Learn the art of eating well.
  • Move your body and breathe well. The intensity of movement depends on how intensely you are going to cleanse. Become aware of breathing, factors that affect healthy breathing such blocked nasal passages and the chemicals that you are breathing in your environment.
  • Remove the chemicals in your environment as found in cleaning, beauty or home products. Learn what to use as alternatives.
  • Declutter or clean your environment: remove, give away, donate, recycle, and sell items you don’t use anymore.
  • Drink OVViO Organic Tea. To support the cleansing of additives, chemicals and simply aid digestion or you will be prescribed something more individual if needed.

You may stop here or continue on with cleanse.

Part 2 also known as GUT GARDENING:

After 1-2 weeks, book in for a 30 minute consultation to begin cleansing your Digestive System with herbs. You will need to bring in a urine sample  to assess adverse microbial pathogens or bad bugs. This process takes 2 weeks.http://www.ovvioorganics.com.au/meet/urinary-indican-test

  • Bowel Purge (optional): Before you take herbs to microbial cleanse and repair your digestion and cleanse your bowels a purge is required to remove large items of dysbiotic material. Purge with Epsom salt or a herb called Cascara. The next day begin Cleansing Digestive  Tonic. This is not indicated if you have diarrhoea.
  • Prescribe:  A Cleansing Digestive Tonic:
  1. Digestive Microbial Cleanse.Weed bad bugs: parasites, bacteria, yeast with herbs that act as antimicrobials.
  2. Digestive Tone & Repair Bowel Cleanse. Aid digestion by using strong bitter herbs (digestion occurs in your mouth, stomach and small intestine. Use pancreatic and gall bladder herbs (accessory organs) to stimulate bile and pancreatic juices into your small intestine for further digestion.

  • Eliminate certain foods: Take the load off digestion by eliminating allergenic foods or hard to digest foods. This also the starves the bugs (especially fungus loves sugar!) and allows you to start using fat as fuel rather than carbohydrates. When you eat fat and protein as your main fuel source you allow the body to cleanse and heal more efficiently. It also helps you get off the addiction to carbohydrates. Fat offers 3 times more energy than carbs and requires less energy input for greater energy out put.
  1. nutrient dense food

Part 3: Seed and Restore absorption/Tone leaky gut

After 2 weeks you will bring in another urine sample to reassess bugs during a 15 or 30 minute consultation.

Seeding or gut reinoculation

Reinoculate with good bugs – As diligently as you weed we need to diligently seed. The type of probiotic whether it is a food source or a strong culture in powder or capsule form will depend on severity of gut microbial over growth.

Maintaining Healthy gut bugs

Make Curds & Whey and Lactoferment Vegetables. Whey is required to lactoferment vegetables.  This is how you obtain whey and as a by product you can make the best curd possible or fresh cheese!

Maintain healthy digestive function & bridge the digestive to the systemic organs

Herbs are used if there are any leftover symptoms, to aid digestion, kill eggs of parasites & aid bowel motions.

Leaky gut repair & tone absorption

Provide essential nutrients for the healing of the intestinal mucosa. An increased intestinal permeability. The intestinal wall is meant to be leaky that is it is supposed to let nutrients from the food that we eat pass through into our bodies. A problem occurs when the lining of the intestines becomes damaged and the pores become larger. This allows undigested food (food only partially digested does not extract all our nutrients), toxins, and microorganisms into the blood, activating our immune system. Also the liver has to work harder as this is the organ that detoxifies the blood and neutralises any toxic substances. What can affect the lining of our intestines? Normal bacteria protect the lining. If an overgrowth of abnormal bacteria grows or our good bacteria is reduced e.g. by antibiotics, stress, poor HCL and digestive enzymes our lining can become unprotected and damaged.

Foods to introduce slowly over the next 7 days (this will depend on an individual’s level of bugs and toxicity). It is very important to reinoculate first before re introducing foods for at least 7 days otherwise you may get a return of symptoms.

You may stop here with cleanse or continue on….

Part 4: Systemic Cleanse

Review how to systemically cleanse after cleansing and repairing digestive system. 30 minute consult. Note: The liver is often detoxed first but this needs to be left to last as toxins go from the digestive system to the liver.

First part of Systemic Cleanse: A herbal tonic will be prescribed that will tone and cleanse each of the systemic organs. This tonic is prescribed for up to 1-2 weeks

  • Kidney Cleanse How much to drink? And what to drink? When to drink for healthy kidney function. Learn factors that effect kidney function and dehydrate.
  • Lung Cleanse The lungs detox up to 70% of toxins.
  • Lymphatic Cleanse Promote lymphatic cleansing internal) and external (salt scrubs, baths and dry brush massage)

Second part of Systemic Cleanse: A herbal tonic will be prescribed that will tone and cleanse each of the systemic organs. This tonic is prescribed for up to 1-2 weeks longer if there has been a high intake or toxins or chemicals.

  • Liver & Gall Bladder Cleanse Weed out bugs in the liver. Stimulate liver function and regenerate liver.
  • Skin Cleanse Learn about health of skin and balance any skin problems.  Look at internal factors as well as external eg fabric fibres, clothes washing products, how to take care of skin and what to use topically.

Part 5: (optional)

This part is not for everyone. It is called the Liver/Gall Bladder Flush. This helps eliminate gallstones and promotes healthy emulsification of fats.

What happens at the end of the Cleanse?

Book in for a complimentary 30 minute consult to assess results and implement ongoing health and lifestyle recommendations.

What we prescribe on a Cleanse:

For each step we recommend the following to help the body detox and regenerate: organic food & fluids, organic herbs, meditation, salt baths and scrubs, body brushing, exercise, breathing well and books to read. We recommend just enough to get a therapeutic response. We do not believe in prescribing synthetic or natural supplements.

Working, smoking and taking medication/supplements on a Cleanse:

  • Working It is recommended during a detox to take things as slowly as possible. Relax, meditate, walk and do only gentle exercises. How you feel on your detox depends how toxic you are and if you are gentle on yourself. Because the detox is done over an 8-12 week period, detox symptoms are mild as each step is implemented slowly. Remember this is not a fast where detox symptoms can be quite severe and require bed rest.
  • Smoking As a smoker, a detox is probably what you need most. Ideally it is better to give up before you detox. Though doing a detox while you still smoke will only benefit you and may help you lose your addiction to nicotine. Reducing the amount you smoke is better. Using nicotine patches may also be a solution. If you are a social smoker that is 1-2 per day we advise you to stop while cleansing
  • Medication If you are taking prescribed medication you should discuss you detox with you doctor as dosages of some medication maybe affected during a detox. We recommend stopping any over the counter medication eg Panadol. We can prescribe natural alternatives for many symptoms.
  • Supplements I do not recommend taking synthetic or processed natural products as nutritional supplements. I believe we can obtain all nutrition from whole foods eating and following the principles of ancestral, cultural eating as discovered by Dr Weston A price. A healthy digestive and immune system will further enable you to complete digest and absorb food and eliminate wastes. Please let me know if you are taking supplements whether natural or synthetic.http://www.ovvioorganics.com.au/about/supplement-philosoph

Will I experience any symptoms during my Cleanse?

This will depend on your level of toxicity and exposure to toxins and how much you implement the detox program. Generally the first few days are the worst as toxins are weeded out. Some symptoms you may experience: fuzzy head, aches and pains and some resurfacing of old symptoms. As you move through your detox you will feel clearer and lighter and your digestive system will work brilliantly.

Die Off symptoms

These are symptoms that occur when the bugs start to die and the system is cleansing them out. Common die off symptoms: Fatigue, brain fog, gastro-intestinal distress such as nausea, gas, bloating, diarrhoea or constipation, low grade fever, headache, sore throat, body itch, muscle and / or joint soreness or pain, feeling as if  coming down with a flu. The best thing to do is half the dose of your prescription by me so you are not suffering too much and drink plenty of water. It will slow the cleansing down just a little but there is no rush and no need to suffer along the way.

Best avoid Cleanse:

Cleanses are best avoided if you are pregnant and extremely stressed out, overworked and have little time to rest and heal the body.

Why do I not recommend Juicing, Unsupervised Fasting or Cutting out Meat on a Cleanse?

Juicing: The problem is too much sugar which stimulates unhealthy microbial overgrowth, it is fruit & vegetable wastage as you would never consume that amount of fruit & vegetable in one sitting, and it doesn’t teach you about real food or how to eat ongoing and it is low in nutrients. The other thing is certain vegetables should not be consumed raw eg spinach

Unsupervised Fasting: reducing the amount of food you eat is something I am all for, eating 2 meals per day is fine as well as long as it is nutrient dense. Fasting on no food and simply consuming water & juices is rapid detoxification and can cause a toxic overload of you are not resting and staying hydrated. For a lighter load on your digestive system it is better to eat smaller meals, drink lots of fluids, herbal teas & bone broths and meat & vegetable soups, steamed greens with raw meat or seafood.

Cutting out Meat on a Cleanse: Yes if is poorly sourced, artificially preservative dense preserved meats, deep fried meat, high temperature cooked meats, grain fed meats, grain finished meats, caged eggs & chooks, non pastured chooks etc etc etc Meat – slow cooked or raw, bones in soups helps to keep the nutrition up to detox more effectively.

Completed a Seasonal Cleanse with Anthia last season….and would like to do one again.

Book in for a 15 minute consult with a urine sample so I can prescribe the best herbal support and address any new or old symptoms. If it has been a while and there are many symptoms book in for a 30 minute consult.
